The ninth annual selection of the “Mayor’s Book Club” was announced on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at a press conference at City Hall in downtown Austin. The Mayor selected the book Amigoland by local author Oscar Casares. Amigoland tells the story of two stubborn, estranged, and ageing brothers who live in a small town on the Mexican border. The brothers are brought together by the urging of Celestino’s much younger girlfriend, Socorro. Together, the two brothers and Socorro catch a bus into Mexico hoping to discover more about a family legend.
This year we are lucky to honor author Oscar Casares who lives in Austin and teaches creative writing at the University of Texas. We look forward to hosting Mr. Casares at several Mayor’s Book Club events.
The Library, in conjunction with the Mayor's office, Austin Public Library Friends Foundation and the University of Texas Humanities Institute, launches its annual citywide reading campaign to develop a community experience through reading and discussion of a shared book. We invite all of Austin to read the book and then join together in special events and programs February through April 2010.
Funded in whole or in part by a Loan Star Libraries Grant authorized by the Texas Legislature and awarded by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission to the Austin Public Library.
