Texas Libraries Come Together to Announce the Release of a New Nationwide Public Opinion Study on Public Libraries and to Recognize Recent Local Library Accomplishments

In the Age of the Internet, Americans Say Public Libraries Are Essential to 21st Century Communities

Announcement to take place at the Faulk Central Library, 800 Guadalupe St. Austin, Texas

WHAT:
In a public opinion study released today by Public Agenda and the Americans for Libraries Council the report shows that the American people prize public library service despite the growing influence of the Internet. The report named “Long Overdue: A Fresh Look at Public Attitudes About Libraries in the 21st Century” show the results of a national survey. The survey identifies 5 key components from the public: Libraries are highly valued, Libraries are important 21st century resources, voters love Libraries, Libraries use tax funds wisely, the public welcomes a greater role for Libraries. The Texas State Library and Archives Commission, the Texas Library Association, along with the Austin Public Library and Central Texas regional libraries come together to announce this report to Austin and to the State of Texas and to additionally recognize recent accomplishments of public libraries around the Central Texas and the Austin area. The report will be distributed to those attending and can also be found on the web at www.publicagenda.org.

BACKGROUND:
Public Agenda is a nonprofit organization dedicated to nonpartisan public policy research. Founded in 1975 by former U.S. Secretary of State Cyrus Vance and Daniel Yankelovich, the social scientist and author, Public Agenda is well respected for its influential public opinion surveys and balanced citizen education materials. Its mission is to inject the public's voice into crucial policy debates. Public Agenda seeks to inform leaders about the public's views and to engage citizens in discussing complex policy issues.

Americans for Libraries Council is a nonprofit organization that works to keep libraries high on the national agenda and at the center of our communities. The council unites leaders from many sectors — academic, artistic, corporate, governmental, nonprofit and philanthropic — to build support for America's remarkable system of libraries.
