Howson Branch Open House Celebration
Bring the whole family to the Howson Branch Open House celebration, 2500 Exposition Boulevard on Saturday, April 10 from 10:00 a.m. to noon and “spring” into the season with the rebirth of this perennially charming branch. There will be a host of activities provided for our youngest customers, including balloon sculpting, face painting, vegetable planting in miniature pots, and decorating bug collection jars. It is our fondest wish that the community will show up in force to enjoy refreshments, admire their like-new community library, and be entertained by the music of the Austin Jazz Workshop.
Be the first to see the new open space layout of the book stacks which improves the visual connection between library staff and customers while maximizing the natural day lighting so valued in a library. Experience the sophisticated new color palette, whimsical interior finishes and fine architectural detailing which not only enhances the original pecan wood paneling of the facility but provides a unifying theme of rectilinear forms throughout, which is reminiscent of buildings of this era. Relax in the Southerland Reading Room with your favorite magazine and admire Mr. Southerland’s original watercolors which once again decorate the walls. Bring your laptop to the WIFI bar and charge up its battery while you’re ensconced on a sleek but comfortable and adjustable molded walnut wood stools. Learn about the benefits of our new 1,000 gallon Rain Water Harvesting System located in the “Green Garden” that’s integrated with the new reflective “cool roof” and have your little ones compare the difference between pressurized water and gravity feed water.
Find out about all the sustainable practices adhered to during this library renovation as we followed our philosophy of "reuse", "renew" and "recycle". Particular attention was paid to specifying products with 100% recycled content including the carpeting and counter-tops, and installing easily renewable or regenerative materials such as the linoleum flooring and maple wood veneer. Wherever possible in the facility, furniture was refinished and reused rather than replaced. These are just a few examples of the efforts taken by the Library with this project to be good stewards of the environment and to demonstrate sound and practical methods of conserving our natural resources.
