Library’s Leaf for a Leaf Urban Forest Steward Class Planted 30 Trees

Library’s Leaf for a Leaf Urban Forest Steward Class Planted 30 Trees

On Saturday, February 27, 2010 as part of the APL Leaf for a Leaf program finale, the Urban Forest Steward Class planted a grove of 30 trees at Kealing Park, 1500 Rosewood Avenue, adjacent to the Carver Museum and the Carver Branch of the Austin Public Library. This concluded four months of programs that encouraged Austinites to borrow books from the library to reduce the number of trees that are cut down to make paper and to plant and care for trees. All in all, Leaf for a Leaf participants read over one million pages. A tree was planted for every 100,000 pages read, plus one tree was planted for each of the 20 Austin Public Library locations.

Leaf for a Leaf programs were aimed at adults and children. The programs included presentations about preventing oak wilt, selecting trees for residential landscaping, and the history of the Oak Springs Preserve. To engage the younger set, Literature Live! presented the puppet show Mr. Tamarin’s Trees at three different locations. There were also two presentations by the Austin Nature and Science Center using hands-on activities to teach children about trees and their roles in ecosystems. As part of Leaf for a Leaf, the Library provided meeting room space and helped to publicize the Urban Forest Steward classes, which are sponsored by the Parks Foundation. There were also three memorial tree plantings.

Leaf for a Leaf was made possible in part by a grant from Austin Energy and in cooperation with the Urban Forestry division of the Austin Parks and Recreation Department. For more information please call 512-974-7400 or visit www.cityofaustin.org/library.
